Linking Overturning, Recirculation, and Melt in Glacial Fjords

چکیده
Fjord circulation modulates the connection between marine-terminating glaciers and ocean currents offshore. These fjords exhibit both overturning horizontal recirculations, which are driven by water mass transformation at head of fjord via subglacial discharge plumes distributed meltwater plumes. However, little is known about how various characteristics influence interaction 3D glacial melt. In this study, high-resolution numerical simulations idealized demonstrate that recirculation strength controls melt, feeds back on recirculation. The relationships overturning, recirculation, melt rate well predicted vorticity balance, reduced-order parameterizations, empirical scaling arguments. theories allow us to take into account near-glacier velocities, yield improved predictions

Characteristics and dynamics of two major Greenland glacial fjords
The circulation regimes of two major outlet glacial fjords in southeastern Greenland, Sermilik Fjord (SF) and Kangerdlugssuaq Fjord (KF), are investigated using data collected in summer 2009. The two fjords show similar flow patterns, with a time-dependent, vertically sheared flow structure dominating over the background estuarine flow driven by buoyancy input. We show that this time-dependent ...
متن کاملMartian Glacial Melt and Atmospheric Methane
Despite conditions on Mars favoring cold-based glaciers, there is also evidence of wetbased glaciers. We compare potential sources of basal water, and conclude that several melt mechanisms are possible. Gas hydrate clathrates within glacial ice can cause melting point depression, and are an intriguing possibility because the dissociation of clathrates releases a large quantity of energy in addi...
متن کاملLinking glacial and future climates
In this paper we explore the relationships between the modelled climate of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and that for doubled atmospheric carbon dioxide compared to the pre-industrial climate by analysing the output from an ensemble of runs from the MIROC3.2 GCM. 5 Our results lend support to the idea in other recent work that the Antarctic is a useful place to look for historical data which c...
متن کاملGlacial Atlantic overturning increased by wind stress in climate models
Previous Paleoclimate Model Intercomparison Project (PMIP) simulations of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) showed dissimilar results on transports and structure. Here we analyze the most recent PMIP3 models, which show a consistent increase (on average by 41±26%) and deepening (663±550 m) of the AMOC with respect to preindustrial simulations, in ...
متن کاملSurface wind-stress threshold for glacial Atlantic overturning
[1] Using a coupled model of intermediate complexity the sensitivity of the last glacial maximum (LGM) Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) to the strength of surface wind-stress is investigated. A threshold is found below which North Atlantic deep water formation (DWF) takes place south of Greenland and the AMOC is relatively weak. Above this threshold, DWF occurs north of the Gr...
